Luca Orvietto was born in Brazil and moved to Chicago in the 1990s to do his graduate studies. There Luca was hired by private-equity GSquare and became one of its star performers. Luca is highly educated and sophisticated but also introverted and very nerdy. After years living with an older wealthy man, Luca realizes that re-starting life at 40 is not an easy endeavor in a society that places youth, looks and wealth above character and intellect. Luca had abridged his life to work and career, then he met Nathan Bauer.

Nathan Bauer was born and raised in a small industrial town in Indiana. Nathan had to drop out of college after his girlfriend got pregnant, and, with help from his Aunt Rachel, he found a job as a flight attendant for a regional airline. Jovial and charming, Nathan belongs to a generation that witnessed the dismantling of the American industrial base in the Midwest and the impact on people's livelihoods. Nathan has none of his parents' values of frugality, modesty and religiosity.

Susan Leroy is a Hollywood star whose fame has dimmed as she got older. Former wife of Anthony von Grauff and currently married to football legend John Cooper, Susan is one of the major shareholders at GSquare. She never forgave Georges Lefebvre for stealing Anthony from her and she hates everything and everybody who is dear to him. Steely, intelligent, extremely beautiful and ruthless, Susan is feared and despised at GSquare.

Johnathan Landry is lawyer born in New Orleans. After being a hippie in the 1970s and social activist in the 1980s, Johnathan opened his legal practice in Chicago. Long time partner of Roger Murphy and one of Luca Orvietto's best friends. Johnathan is educated, refined and deeply attached to values of honesty, decency and respect.

Roger Murphy comes from a blue-collar suburb of Chicago. Short, intelligent, aggressive, and with a troubled past, Roger works at GSquare as Human Resources manager. Long term partner of Johnathan Landry and good friend of Luca Orvietto. Roger brags about being a great people reader and despises Nathan Bauer.

Georges Lefebvre

Georges Lefebvre is a Frenchman born in Algeria. Former mathematics professor in Chicago, Georges co-founded GSquare with Anthony von Grauff and later they became a couple. Georges brought to GSquare the people rejected by the establishment because of sexual orientation, appearance or background, thus building his army of misfits and earning the nickname LaCage for the firm, where more than 50% of employees are queer.

Irene Lores works as executive assistant to Georges Lefebvre since his days as university professor. Irene is GSquare's resident matron, taking care of everything and everybody. She is extremely proud of being employee number 1 at the firm. Irene is the only person at GSquare that Susan Leroy does not despise.

Rachael Bauer is Nathan's aunt. She was the first in the family to get a bachelor's degree and works as airline customer service manager. Vivacious, gregarious and communicative, she left her small town in Indiana to be an independent woman in Indianapolis. Rachel never accepted Nathan giving up on his studies and dreams because of his girlfriend pregnancy. She is the only one in the family to know he is bisexual.
