Nathan retells the story:
"Luca and I lounged at the pool deck. I knew—always knew—that rich people weren’t necessarily happy.
"I just wanted a glimpse of their world. And then I found myself spending a Saturday at a little piece of paradise, but it wasn’t what I’d seen in the magazines. Everything was simple, yet comfortable. The food was amazing, but it tasted like country home food. And people cared for each other.
"I couldn’t (still can’t!) understand why Luca preferred to work ten, twelve, and sometimes fourteen hours a day in freezing-cold Chicago while he could be enjoying that life, the country home, the swimming pool. Why sacrifice everything? For a fucking job buying and selling companies? To get, like, a tap on the back by the old French guy?
"My thoughts flew away to Indiana, to what Kim and Jonah would be doing at that time, like watching TV on a cold Saturday afternoon, in that cramped place atop my dad’s garage. I missed my son and guilt filled my heart."
